Carmen-
Carmen is a name that represents two names taken as one.
Its first (and original) root is Italian and Spanish, used as
a diminutive nickname for Carmel and Carmelo (respectively),
from Hebrew karmel, "garden." The second (and more recent)
origin is from Latin carmen, which means "song," "tune," or "poem."
This gorgeous old-fashioned mare was bought in 2009 as a hopeful wife for Taraco Fiasco if he continues to recover from his 2008 accident. She epitomises
the type of welsh cob I adore and strive to breed - a typey little 14.1hh mare, loads of quality bone and feather, really deep through the body with
a lovely front and the backside of a cook! She is exceptionally well bred by Derwen Telynor and features Telynor, Nebo Black Magic and Cippyn Real Magic as the first three stallions in her
immediate pedigree. It genuinely does not get much better than that!
Originally retained as a broodmare by her breeder Nelson Smith at Trevallion Stud this mare was then sold to Greenwings Stud in Norfolk where she produced some lovely stock before being sold, finally ending up
at Davids Stud in Wales. She is a full sister to Trevallion Demetrius who is a fantastic sire as well as a successful ridden stallion including
Champion Ridden Stallion in Royal Welsh Show 2005. Derwen Telynor stock has provided the foundations for some of the best studs in the country as he was used by Trevallion,
Thorneyside, Synod, Llanarth and many more top studs in his time. We are priviliged to have such a wonderful type of cob in our field, let alone one with such
an illustrious pedigree. Sadly she proved to be, not only not in foal, but also infertile and unable to readily get in foal. She adored the foals here so
despite the odds we gave her every chance to get in foal, AIing her twice and sending her to some expert reproduction specialists. Sadly this all proved futile and it was not possible to get her in foal.
It appeared that the only possible way of improving her chances was to get her 'hunting fit' and as she seemed to have
spent several years being passed about, we took the (probably unprecedented!) decision to have her backed at 18 years old.
She has such a lovely temperament, loved people with people and was so gentle in her nature I was pretty confident she would take to
being ridden like the proverbial duck to water. Needless to say she did and it was a pleasure and a privilege to give this lovely old lady a
different string to her bow. With limited time to ride myself, she was gifted to Alison Roe who has a lovely yard with miles of off road hacking through
forests on her doorstep and plenty of willing jockeys. Carmen now lives a life of riley, nannying the youngsters and weaned foals, occassionally hacking
through the forests and being much loved. Should all the riding ever pay off and enable her to get in foal I know she will love having a baby to nurture, but
if not, I know she has a lovely life as a happy hacker in front of her. We would never wash our hands of this mare
and remain in constant touch with Alison over Carmen's welfare. It was a true privelege to be part of this lovely old mare's life, and to
give her the opportunity to start a new part of her life under saddle.
